Year 2 Class

Autumn Term 1

Week commencing 16th October

English- In English this week we have created our own version of, The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. We have loved changing the original version and have written marvellous versions. 

Maths- We have been learning all about adding three 1-digit numbers, adding to the nearest 10 and adding across 10. it has been very tricky but we have been trying really hard!

RE- This week in RE we have focused on 'The Wedding at Cana' and how peoples' faith in Jesus led to these miracles.

Week commencing 11th October

English- In English this week we have created a class version of, The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. We have loved changing the original version and adding exciting changes. The lunches are far more exciting and a ferocious shark has been stealing it! The children can't wait to write their very own version.

Maths- We have been learning our number bonds to 100 and finding one more and one less from any given number up to 100! 

RE- This week in RE we have been learning about the miracles of Jesus. Today we heard the story about Jesus healing a blind man.

Week commencing 2nd October:

English- In English this week we have started our new story, The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. We have loved guessing who has been eating poor Mr Grinlings lunch and thinking of new plans for keeping it safe! We have drawn beautiful story maps and are looking forward to writing a setting description for the lighthouse.

Maths- We have finished Place Value and have moved on to addition and subtraction. We have been learning our number bonds to 10 and 20 and have been finding out all about Fact Families.

RE- This week in RE we have been writing psalms to praise and thank God. We have also been rehearsing our song for Harvest. We can't wait to perform our song on Friday. We hope to see you there.

Week commencing 25th September:

RE- This week in RE we have been learning about Daniel's gifts and talents as he puts his trust in God when facing the lions' den. We then thought about our gifts and talents and how we can use them. Sometimes to help ourselves, to help others or to thank God for all the things we are good at.

English: we are using the story How to hide a Lion as a model but this week we have changed the story to How to hide an animal of our own choice! We have penguins, chimpanzees and turtles being hidden in the most peculiar places. The children will write their own stories using expanded noun phrases and a range of sentences. We continue to focus on handwriting and letter formation.

Maths: In maths this week we are comparing and ordering objects and numbers. We are using the stem sentences: 45 is greater than 24 and 24 is less than 45. 5 tens and 2 ones is equal to 52.

Week commencing 18th September:

RE - This week in RE, the children have been learning about stories from the Old Testament. In week one, we focused on the key messages such as trust, love and understanding. This week, we hav focused on the stories of Abraham and Noah. Thinking about how they listened to God's call and acted in love for others. The children were very excited to listen to the story of Jonah and the whale and can articulate the key message. 

English - we are using the story How to hide a Lion as a model but this week we have changed the story to How to hide a cheetah. The children are learning to write a set of instructions as a class including expanded noun phrases and a range of sentences such as question and exclamation. We continue to focus on handwriting and letter formation. 

Maths - We continue with place value and learning numbers up to 100. We have been partitioning numbers up to 3 ways such as 73 - 70 and 3, 60 and 13 and 50 and 23. The children are enjoying maths and using the practical equipment.

Week commencing 4th September:  We are looking forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday. 

Autumn Term 2

Week beginning: 11th December 

English - this week we have completed our non-fiction unit on the Human Body. The children created their own 'flap' books to display their information from research they gathered last week. The children added many interesting facts and questions. 

Maths - We have now completed the unit on shape and are starting money. This is something the children can find difficult so please do help them at home. 

RE- We are continuing the Advent unit, and this week we looked at Zechariah and how he is special person. We discussed how the angel visited him and linked this to the visit to Mary. We then thought about his lack of faith when he did not believe and this changed him. 

Christmas Nativity- parents the children are really enjoying rehearsing for our Nativity! This year , Year 2 are stars.

Costumes:

Stars- please can your children bring in a navy t-shirt and navy trousers. These can be leggings or joggers but no jeans please.

Mary- a blue dress and a white head scarf/tea towel.

Joseph- we have a costume but please send in brown or black trousers and a brown or black t-shirt.

Donkey- grey trousers and a grey t-shirt.

Gabriel- A white t-shirt and white leggings or joggers

 

Week beginning 4th December-

English - This week, we are writing a short explanation text. The children will be creating their own 'flap' book. Their challenge this week has been to use interesting sentence openers. 

Maths-  We are continuing with shape and looking at the properties of shape. We are looking at how many edges, vertices and faces 3D shapes have. 

RE - this week we have started Advent. This unit is designed to develop children’s knowledge of the time, symbols and characters of the liturgical Season of Advent. It will focus on Advent being a season of preparation for Christmas through the story of John the Baptist and parish activities.

Christmas Nativity- parents the children are really enjoying rehearsing for our Nativity and today we went up on the stage for the first time! This year , Year 2 are stars.

Week beginning 28th November 

English - This week, we are beginning our unit on survival linked to our History and Geography. The children will be creating their own 'flap' book. This week, the children have created their own' flap' sheet with information of their choice and will start to explore good model text. Their challenge this week has been to find adverbs to use in their writing. 

Maths-  this week we have completed an end of unit assessment. The children were excellent at trying to apply their skills to a formal situation. We are continuing with shape and looking at the properties of shape. The vocabulary can be challenging therefore please do discuss words such as sides, edges and vertices. 

RE - this week we completed the unit on special celebrations. We have learnt about baptism and marriage as sacraments of the church and why they are special. We extended our learning by thinking deeply when writing a prayer to St Joseph and how we could incorporate the values and virtues. 

 

Week commencing 20th November

English- In English this week we are writing on our own version of the The Incredible Book Eating Boy. We have snow eating unicorns, football eating footballers, stick eating caterpillars! So many creative ideas. We are working hard to include figurative language, adverbs and adjectives.

Maths- We have started shape this week. We are learning the names for 2-D and 3-D shapes. We are counting edges and vertices and creating patterns.

Re- In RE we have been learning all about Baptism and why it is the beginning of a person's journey in faith. We have also been looking at the symbols of Baptism and why they are important.

Week commencing 13th November

English- In English this week we are focusing on The Incredible Book eating boy and are trying to persuade Henry not to eat our favourite books! We are using exciting sentence openers and will be writing a persuasive letter. Wish us luck!

Maths- We have been learning all about adding and subtracting numbers (across 10). We are also comparing number sentences using: greater than/less than and equal to. 

Re- In RE we are learning about Special Celebrations. This week we looked at the liturgical year.

 

Spring Term 1

Week commencing the 5th February:

English- In English we are writing our final piece about our dragons. The children are enjoying using adjectives and adverbs to describe their dragons, where they live and what they love to do!

Maths- We have are really enjoying our multiplication and division unit. This week are looking at making equal groups.

Re- In RE, we have been looking at what makes a good disciple. The children have been reflecting on what qualities you need to be a good disciple and enjoyed creating a job advert for the perfect disciple today.

Week commencing the 29th January:

English- In English this week we have started our new non-fiction unit on Dragons. The children have designed beautiful maps of their dragon worlds and have written an advert for a dragon catcher today. We will be writing a non-fiction text about 

Maths- We have are really enjoying our multiplication and division unit. Today we looked at arrays and the children have been writing repeated addition sentences and then the multiplication sentence to match. 

Re- In RE we have been looking at how Mary cared and supported Jesus. The children looked at different art work and reflected on what the paintings were all about.

Week commencing the 15th January:

English- In English this week we are writing a class version of 'The Storm Whale'. We have changed the 'whale' into 'a monkey' and have been writing instructions on how to look after one. The children are very excited to write their own version of the story next week!

Maths- We are continuing with money this week. We have been calculating with money and making a pound. The children are enjoying looking at the British coins and have been set some challenging problem solving comparing amounts.

Re- In RE we have been looking at the journey of Mary and Joseph and the journey of the Magi. We have then linked this to the journey of refugees and the difficulties they face. If they are similar now to those that Mary and Joseph faced. 

Spring Term 2

 

 

Week commencing the 11th March:

English- In English this week we have created our own version of The Extraordinary Gardener. The children have finished their stories today and have spent time ediitng and improving them. 

Maths- We have started our new unit on Length and height. The children are loving measuring objects with a ruler and the school class and hall with metre sticks. They have enjoyed estimating what might be shorter or longer than a metre. We now know that there are 100cm in 1 metre.

Re- In RE we have started Holy Week and today they learned all about Palm Sunday. 

 

Week commencing the 26th February:

English- In English this week we have created a class version of The Extraordinary Gardener. The children decided to plant a shooting star instead of a seed. So our extraordinary garden is now a magnificent universe! I can't wait to see what other ideas they come up with next week. 

Maths- We are really enjoying our multiplication and division unit. This week we have been multiplying and dividing by 2s, and 10s. 

Re- In RE we have been looking at understanding some of the difficulties in forgiving others and recognising the qualities of being a forgiving person.

Summer Term 1

Week beginning 22nd April

Maths-

This week in maths we are looking at Fractions. The children have enjoyed recognising a half and finding a half.

Literacy-

In Literacy this week the children are writing their own version of Katie in......The children have planned their writing and have started to write them up. We have Katie travelling all over from Kenilworth to India and China!

RE- 

This week the childre have created their own piece of art work based on the story of the Road to Emmaus.

 

Week beginning 15th April

Maths-

This week in maths we are finishing our Mass and Capacity unit. The children have had great fun estimating capacity and then checking by measuring in millilitres and tomorrow we will look at litres. The classroom has been very wet! We look forward to welcoming you in on Friday. The children will be starting Fractions.

Literacy-

In Literacy this week the children are continuing with our new text, Katie in London. We have looked at the beautiful St Paul's Cathedral and children have written a postcard in te role of Katie using capital letters for proper nouns and wonderful descriptive language.

RE- 

This week we have been looking at the story the Road Emmaus and today we looked at the key symbols of easter and designed our own Paschal candle.
